Originally composed solely of 'core worlds,' the Alliance fought the Unification War several years prior to the show's timeframe to bring all colonized worlds under its control. The Independent Faction, known as 'Browncoats,' resisted this centralization, attempting to keep outer worlds autonomous. The war raged for several years with heavy casualties on both sides until the Alliance emerged victorious, signing an armistice that secured their control over the entire system. The organization operates a massive fleet of spaceships resembling floating cities, carrying smaller gunships and even nurseries. Ground troops are nicknamed 'purple bellies' to contrast with the Browncoats. Crew members wear gray uniforms similar to Imperial German Army attire from World War I, while officers in the movie Serenity wear blue. The military structure remains largely undefined, featuring both naval ranks like Commander and ground force ranks such as Colonel and General.

In the episode 'Serenity,' Captain Malcolm Reynolds wistfully mentions wanting to be 'king of all Londinium,' a phrase that may just be an idiom given that Inara Serra's customers often hold the title of Lord. Evidence also suggests technocratic elements; in the episode 'Safe,' Simon Tam's parents discuss his potential future as a 'medical-elect,' an elected Technocrat representing the medical sector. In the film Serenity, the crew discovers the dark truth behind River Tam's conditioning: the Alliance inadvertently created the first Reavers on Miranda while attempting to create peace through psychological experiments.
