Hoban 'Wash' Washburne
The ace pilot of Serenity who flew to see the stars he couldn't see from home.
Hoban 'Wash' Washburne is the pilot of the Firefly-class spaceship Serenity, played by Alan Tudyk. He is married to the ship's first mate, Zoe, and is referred to exclusively by his nickname, 'Wash'. Born on a planet with an atmosphere so polluted that no stars were visible, he became a pilot specifically to see the sky beyond his home. A laid-back man with a dry, occasionally laconic sense of humor, Wash often represents the pragmatic, 'cut-and-run' opinion during shipboard debates and serves as a calming influence in heated arguments.

Lore & Background
Some of Wash's backstory is detailed in the Serenity novelization. After his friend Mr. Universe hacked records to become top of the class, Universe silenced him by offering services whenever needed. Actor Alan Tudyk believes Wash served as a pilot during the Unification War, though he did not specify which side; Tudyk also jokes that Wash's ship was shot down after a single flight and he spent the remainder of the war in a POW camp entertaining prisoners with shadow puppets. Later traveling widely, his reputation grew until multiple captains courted him before he accepted Mal Reynolds' offer. He eventually married Zoe, who initially claimed something about him 'bothered' her. Despite their dangerous lifestyle, they retained a happy marriage, though Wash occasionally grew jealous of Zoe's close relationship with Mal.
In Their Own Story
Wash dies near the end of the film Serenity when a harpoon launched by a Reaver ship impales him, killing him instantly. His final words are 'I am a leaf on the wind, watch how I...', but the word 'soar' is cut off by his death. Following this event, his shipmates erect a memorial to him on Mr. Universe's moon, though it remains unclear if it serves as a tomb. In tribute, Mal Reynolds takes up pilot duties with River Tam as his new co-pilot, while Wash's collection of toy dinosaurs remains left on the bridge.
Reader's Guide
Wash serves as the pilot of Serenity and is married to Zoe, the ship's first mate. He is only ever called 'Wash'; when Mal questions this in the novelization, Wash asks, 'Why would anyone call themselves Hoban?' He grew up wanting to see stars that were hidden by pollution on his home world. While he sometimes appears cowardly or voices cut-and-run opinions, he has proven his resolve and willingness to do violence on behalf of friends many times. His collection of toy dinosaurs remains a permanent fixture on the pilot's station as a tribute after his death.
