Originally composed solely of "core worlds" like Sihnon and Londinium, the Alliance fought a years-long Unification War to bring all colonized worlds under its control. The war resulted in heavy casualties on both sides, and the Battle of Serenity Valley was the final major engagement, after which the war ended. The Fleet now utilizes massive city-ships that carry smaller gunships and even contain nurseries for crew families, as revealed in the episode "Bushwhacked." The military structure blends naval ranks like Commander with ground force titles like Colonel and General. Crewmembers on starships wear primarily blue or gray-blue uniforms, without a consistent distinction between officers and enlisted personnel. In the film Serenity, crew members uniformly wear blue uniforms, and the fleet appears as sleeker, more streamlined warships, suggesting a higher CGI budget for the movie.

In Their Own Story

In the pilot episode "Serenity," the flag on the IAV spaceship Dortmunder blends American and Chinese elements: a blue field with red and white stripes alongside a red field with yellow stars. Two versions of this flag appear in the series, one with 13 stripes and another with five. During the events of the movie Serenity, the Alliance hires local security companies to assist their forces. The Fleet's reach is vast; during the film, an Operative warns Malcolm Reynolds that despite a weakened regime, the Alliance will pursue him in revenge for ruining the faith of his men. The conflict stems from the Independent Faction's desire for autonomy on outer worlds. The war raged until the Alliance emerged victorious, signing an armistice that secured their control. While some view the Alliance as a "beautiful shining light of democracy" helping people, others see black ops and power-grabbing tactics. In the episode "Ariel," the formal name Union of Allied Planets is used, and the government structure includes a Parliament and a prime minister.
