The Alliance, seeking a non-military method to pacify frontier worlds, secretly authorized the Miranda Project on the remote planet Miranda. Scientists deployed the chemical agent G-23 Paxilon Hydrochlorate, or 'Pax,' into the colony's water supply, intending to suppress aggression and create a compliant populace. However, the Pax had a catastrophic side effect: instead of pacifying the population, it triggered uncontrollable homicidal violence. The colonists turned on each other in a frenzy, resulting in the near-total annihilation of the colony. A small number of survivors were driven irreversibly mad by the chemical, their minds shattered into a state of perpetual rage and violence—these became the Reavers. The Alliance attempted to erase all evidence of the project, but the crew of the ship Serenity eventually uncovered the truth, exposing the cover-up and the horrifying origin of the Reavers to the 'Verse.
